As we wave goodbye to the summer we are ready to welcome all of our school visitors back to the National Space Centre. We are especially excited as we have a multitude of new goodies ready to offer for the new school year!

Mars Lander Workshop

As red leaves creep onto our trees this autumn we have used the inspiration to focus our new workshop on the Red Planet, Mars. This year we invite you to join us in our new Mars Lander workshop where you can launch your very own egg-onaut on a perilous journey from the roof of our galleries to the hard floor below!

After learning about some current Martian probes students will use their engineering and design skills to build a landing system that will make sure your egg-onuat's journey is a safe one. Our Mars Lander workshop is suitable for years 3 - 7 and has science and design and technology curriculum links. The workshop highlights current activities on Mars and focuses on forces, motion and the physics of parachutes.

For an idea of what it takes to land an egg-onaut safely check out the voyage of an egg called Clyde. Clyde the egg-onaut was volunteered to test out landing gear designed by National Space Centre visitors.

Space Cadets

Simulated space missions in our Challenger Learning Centre. As part of the next term we are also giving even more people a chance to launch into space in our newest simulated space mission, Space Cadets! In the mission students will have one hour to build and launch a probe to rendezvous with a comet. In our high tech spacecraft students will take on different roles but must work closely within their team in order to successfully complete their mission.

The Space Cadets mission is opening up our Challenger Learning Centre to the youngest group of astronauts yet. It is suitable for years 3 and 4 and all the tasks and roles have been specially adapted to be suitable for the age group. As part of the mission students will also take part in a gallery trail to help them expand their space and comet knowledge as well.

Video Conferences

Our video conferences are a great way to bring the Space Centre to students without ever having to leave the classroom. We offer a number of different one hour video conferencing sessions and e-mission with something for all key stages. Over summer we have been working hard on making our video conferences assessable to all regardless of how techno savvy you are! As of September 2014 our new video conferencing software allows you to download a free plug-in, enabling you to connect to us just using your normal web browser - it couldn't be safer or easier!
