Explaining the Stars

My favourite place to be in the world is looking up at a clear night sky.

As the English weather doesn't always encourage this, I spend as much time as possible in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium here at the National Space Centre.

Being in our 360 degree dome means I can look up whatever the weather and, as I'm lucky enough to be a Presenter in the Education Team here, I can even share my love of the stars with visitors during our live 'Tour of the Night Sky' shows.

As well as the fantastic animated films created by our NSC Creative team, we offer these extra 'Tour of the Night Sky' shows over most weekends and school holidays - if I had to choose my favourite part of this job, talking about the stars would have to be it!

This week I have been teaching some members of our front of house team, Space Crew, how to present these shows. Each training session has been a pleasure, as Space Crew are already enthusiastic and informed about astronomy; I can't wait to hear them practice their first shows.

Each presenter has a slightly different style and I'm encouraging them to show this individuality, so that every show we give as a team conveys that presenter's passion.

I love being able to use the planetarium to share my favourite constellations and stories, how to find planets among the stars and beautiful photos of many other sights millions and billions of miles away from us.

I can't help but be excited that this passion is shared by so many of our staff, and I hope that all visitors who see a 'Tour of the Night Sky' experience this same sense of wonder about the Universe we live in.
