IPS 2012

The question of how many planetariums exist around the world never entered my mind, until last week when I went to the International Planetarium Society’s 2012 conference (IPS 2012) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

I couldn’t believe there were 700 other delegates!

It was amazing to be surrounded by so many people who work in planetariums, with everyone sharing ideas, enthusiasm and knowledge. The schedule was tightly packed - from 9am-5pm every day; there were demonstration sessions on three of the four evenings as well!

Despite the busy schedule I did find time to look around the exhibition stalls and Dome Village which was a huge exhibition space where 21 portable planetarium domes were set up (one part of it is shown in the photo), allowing all the delegates to see the amazing shows on offer from around the world.

While I was away I missed the start of our fantastic ‘All Star Summer’ and, more especially, the start of our summer Tour of the Night Sky presentations in our own planetarium. The recent preparation and training put in by Space Crew was all worthwhile and I knew Josh would make sure everything ran smoothly in my absence.

We have had some very positive and constructive feedback from our planetarium visitors, which helps us make sure everyone’s experience of the show is a fantastic one.

I can’t wait to get started, putting the many ideas I got from my time at IPS 2012 into practice here, and get on with presenting more Tours of the Night Sky myself – Space Crew are enjoying it so much that even with one show every day I’m going to have to make sure I don’t miss out all summer!
